hmmm....game just shuts off?

Post by CaterpillarAssassin »

Bought Morrowind last night. So far great game except for the just booting me to the desktop for no reason at all. Does it randomly. Ummm....this is with my lappy (p4 1.7, 512ddr, 40gig, Geforce4 440 Go [with drivers that came with lattpy because the newest ones didnt have my lcd's native resolution {1400x1050}], WinXP Pro, latest patch for morrowind (did it without it too), latest sound card drivers from microshaft (windows update said i needed them for some reason). DX8.1. FSAA Off, running game at 1024x768, tried it at 1400x1050 and it seems to me that the game will stay running quite a bit longer at 1024. So it leads me to believe its a video issue. You guys have any ideas?

If I remember correctly Morrowind has that issue. I personally could not fix it and gave up on the game. I had a Geforce 3 and thought it was a driver issue as well. I have'nt tried it since upgrading to a 9700pro.

its either a vid card or ram issue

It runs best at 1024X768

I had the same probs, it was cuase of my one bad piece of ram. Once I replaced the one bad stick, i had no probs
Gone for good. But never say never

Yeah they said "Sorry, it will not work. Your laptop isnt designed to run games." Well I put updated drivers in and its helping alot. If you know how to manually configure a resolution (Like manual input, need 1400x1050 for windows) then please let me know.

Im having the same issue, but not with just morrowind, also in everquest and a couple times in neverwinter nights and counter strike, counter strike seems to be the worst with it. I added some extra cooling to my machine and it seems to do it a little less frequently, could be coincidence but worth a try. I did try removing ram, i have a gig of crutial ram 2100, tried using one stick at a time so im certain that was not it, I switched out ethernet cards, video cards the works and nothing got totally rid of the problem. down to about one boot a week, if you figure it out please share your answer.

I am having the same issue as well. I cannot play NWN (Neverwinter Nights) or RTCW (Return to Castle Wolfenstein) without a lock up or a spontanious reboot, or worse, a crash. I am running an Asus P4T533 board Intel P4b 2.4 Processor and 512mb RIMM4200. I think the problem lies in the onboard sound (in my case) but will not know for sure until later on today when I get out of work (My new soundcard should be here then :) )
