Any ideas?

Post by blade »

Got a barton 2500+ today. Put it in my gigabyte ga-7vrx, booted up saying it's a 1700+, though changing the fsb in the bios to 166 made it show as a 2200.

Ok, booted up fine. Still shows it's a 2200+ but has the correct 1.83mhz. But it was working fine.

Did some searching on amdmb in the gigabyte section and some mentioned to change the multiplier to o/c it. With this gigabyte you do that by dip switches beside the cpu. The default for the 2500 is 11x166. Tried 12.5x166. Booted past the bios but gives me a black screen that looks like a fatal exception. No windows.

Try it back to 12, same thing. Then back to default, still that damn exception. Reste the bios, same thing.

Put back in my 2000+, same damn thing. Can't get to windows. Any ideas?

Then back to default,

yes, I have tried all possible settings. Like I said, the 2000 is back in and the same thing happens. Looks like I might have to format and start over.

xp

Tried booting from the xp cd, starts the install but hangs up. Thought I could use the repair program, but can't get that far. Used seagate disc utility to check it, says it is ok. Only thing I can think os if I gues it was corrupted, may have to format. But I really want to avoid that.

Trying some more things. Anyone know a way to do a force repair from the xp cd?

Stupid Question..

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

But is the CD even slightly scratched? I had a problem with my XPro cd before, made a back up just fine, then tried again. Worked. On another system however, I had a CD-ROM that was semi-faulty and that kept giving me problems. You might want to try another CD-ROM.. Just a thought.. GL eGo

A scratch is not the cause here. Looks like my hd is toast. Wonder how the heck that happened.

if you can get to the bios, look for optimal or fail safe settings

when you get past the bios hold down f8 to see if you can bring up the xp boot screen

try last good config

of just safe mode

or clocked at 100 fsb

you may have boogered up your boot sector with the oc

the 2500+ uses a different +rating system than the tbreds - they figure because more cache they use higher number than with the same ghz tbred - so the bios in your system don't know it's a barton and give you the right + number for a tbred

Tried it all John, but thank you. Thanks everyone. :)

Ran the seagate disk tool and said all was ok, still had probelms so I ran it again. Now it says the drive needs to be replaced. Ran maddisk and said it is corrupted.

Tried it on another system as slave, won't read. But I'll try that more later because I need some files off of it. :;

So now, here is me installing xp from scratch. :(

But darn it, how did the hard drive die?

During all this changing cpu's, I noticed my under monitor power thing blew a fuse, or when I pressed power, a few sparks flew from the switch. So I just plugged the few things that were plugged to it to another terminal. But maybe that did something?

But it wasn't on the computer, just the power adapter.
