so then the 333 bartons run what stock? 166? cause im thinking of getting a 2500 333 barton.

yep. just turn the cpu voltage to 1.7-1.75v, set the FSB to 200, and most of them will do 11x200FSB which is Barton 3200+ speed.

Helps to have some good PC3200 ram too.

Here is a really dumb question, but serious!

Can I majorly UNDER clock a 2500+??
Backwards compatable?

I have 4 systems with 1700xp and 2000xp. All boards are of course 266fsb, so since it is the same socket for the 2500xp 333fsb cpu's can I drop one in a 266 board and expect it to run stable underclocked??

Serious about that since I want the cpu, but right now don't want to buy the new system board.

If that works, then I wonder how high I can clock it? Highest 266fsb cpu there is? or Higher?

I might check for any new bios for my boards, but I dought anything is out for these to support 333fsb.
Biostars, shuttle ak35, Iwill xp333.

Also I will check the board docs, I just had a thought (RARE). They might actually support 333fsb anyway, at least the 3 newer ones. Duhhh, just because I bought the lower cost cpu's doesn't mean the high priced ones weren't supported yet, at that time!

Gee, aren't brain farts wonderfull? Brain is looking at the too expensive 400fsb cpu's and new 400fsb boards, but wallet is buying 333fsb!

ANyway, if I am stuck at the 266 level, will it work?

The Iwill XP333 you have will run a Barton. Flash to the 1220 BIOS.

Or you could buy one of these for $63 @ newegg. Doesn't get much cheaper than that.

yea.. i have good ram.. a pair of corsair XMS 3200 512M that my current 1800 cant run to its potential... i can only get it to 12@145.

forgot what week it was - it was the retail deal from newegg

using a sk800 or whatever they are called with some 60 or 70 mm fan that was laying around - probably a low rpm case fan - it was handy

ran it up to 2.1 @ 1.7v but it was about 47-48 folding which is more than i like and i'm really not sure about the fan atm

backed it down to default and it's running 44C surfing/folding which is fine for the moment

my 2100 was 43C at 2336 @ 1.75 but had a faster fan - i'll dig through my box of fans - i know i have a couple of ones with adjustable speed somewhere but don't feel like looking

so far so good - 8rda+ with latest bios/1024 mixed 3200/2700

this memory only does 172 together so i'll probably try for 13.5x172 which is where i had my 2100

maybe i'll try and wring it out this weekend

I looked and I think the Iwill is the only one with a bios update available.

All it said was "Supports Athlon XP 2600+" though.

Gee I wish I could find more info on it on Iwills site! Didn't the 2600+ come in both 266fsb and 333fsb?
If it supports 333fsb, then why only to 2600+ and not all the way up to the 3000+ ?

I am looking for info on their site about flashing the bios. So far I found the bios update file "xp1220.exe" but no info on how to use it. Do I just copy it to my system and doubleclick it

I may just pop for a board also and leave things alone on whats running already.

Also looks like Neweggs Blowout sale for the 2500XP is over, went from $83 for the retail back up to the $90 it has been for awhile. Listed as Onsale at that price? Wonder if they plan to raise again?
Also I noticed they started a new extended waruantee I hadn't seen before. Was $5 for the 2500xp before the price increased, now extended is $5.40 ? Must be a percentage based charge?
Oh well, I wouldn't buy it anyway. Retail CPU isn't much more than oem and comes with 3yr anyway. Allthough if buying oem I might think about it as it jumps a oem cpu from 30 days to one year!

dnload the BIOS file, extract it to a floppy disk. write down on a piece of paper the EXACT name of the .bin file. Then use a win98 boot disk to start your computer in pure dos mode. AT the A prompt take out the boot floppy and put in the floppy w/ BIOS on it.at the A:/ prompt type [awdflash ] without my brackets I use here. all hell will break loos and the award flash proggy will come up. Look at your paper and type EXACTLy what you have written there including the .bin file extension. sit back and watch the show and then when it tells you it's done it'll prolly say "hit F1 to reset." do that and then take out the floppy.
