.zip with password?

Post by RubberDuckie »

I know winzip will allow you to zip files up with a password. But can windows XP do the same ? If so, how?

I know XP's built-in ZIP utility will open a password protected ZIP file - I've done that several times, but I've never created a password protected zip with XP - I use WinZip.

Duckie,

I know this one...and it wasn't easy to uncover so let my pain be your pleasure:

Here's the instructions from MS on how to do it:
How to Use Password Protection

Files and folders in compressed folders can be protected by using a password. To password protect the contents of a compressed folder:

* Double-click the compressed folder that you want to password protect.
* On the File menu, click Add a Password.
* In the Password box, type the password that you want to use. Type the same password in the Confirm Password box, and then click OK.

Note that when you attempt to move or open a password-protected file, a Password Needed dialog box appears. Type the correct password in the Password box, and then click OK.
It's from MS knowledge base article:
