Is my bios fubared?

ok, so I am trying to set up this new system to be just a file server (for lanparties)

specs

AMD k6-2 450mhz
FIC pa-2013 motherboard
160mb pc100 (2x 64mb, 1x 32)


So i get everything installed, and i go to try to install win2k
I get an error of "not enough extended memory. WinNT systems require 7mb"

Im thinking wtf is this, tryed swapping out the sticks, putting them in different orders, used only one. Still the same error (but at the beginning of the boot, the memory check shows the correct total of whats installed)

So when Im all out of ideas, I figure a cmos clearing is in order....and since I couldnt see a clear cmos jumper, I figured I would pull the battery and reset it that way

Now, when I boot, I get a wierd screen and I cant do anything else



This appears right after the initial boot screen shows




Im all out of ideas. I cant get any farther into the boot to try booting from a floppy or cd. I have reset the bios back to defaults....

I dont know what to do to get this thing to boot.

Hey Talent.. Are you still OCing that processor? I know that it was set for about a 100mhz OC when I sent the board. You might try setting the speed to stock speeds (450mhz) or lower and seeing if that fixes the problem for you. Perhaps that's why it's locking up? I'm not sure. I found this and there appeared to be a little bit of info there on problems with getting that board to boot. I'm still looking for more info for you.

I also found this, and I think I remember you buying a Voodoo 3000 not to long ago? Maybe this could be causing you problems?


First things first. FIC has acknowledged that the PA-2013 (the "big sister" board to the VA-503+, so to speak) cannot handle the voltage requirements of the AGP V3 3000. The PA-2013 will literally burn out under the stress. There is even a warning to this effect in the PA-2013 faq. Thankfully, there is no such warning in the VA-503+ faq. Moreover, the general verdict of FIC newsgroup posters is that recent VA-503+'s (i.e., made within the last 6-9 months) are NOT subject to being fried by Voodoo 3 3000 video cards. Apparently there is no problem whatsoever with v3 2000 AGP cards.

already tried setting the jumpers back to default vcore of 3.3v and the speeds back down to 450mhz

i have also tried another vid card, still same problem

Have you tried booting w/o the HDs yet? I, like you, am thinking it is the bios though due to the weird recognition of all the items after the initial boot in the system summary. Have you tried disabling some of the initial system tests? Like floppy seek on boot and some of the other extended system tests? I'm still trying to find other info on the problem though. I'm sure we'll get it figured out before too long..

Maybe the battery is dead on that board? I don't know if that could/would cause problems.. Got one layin' around you can swap it with?

no...no extra battery...


and I have tried pulling everything from it and still same problem
i have set everything to default, changed what starts up, etc....

still the problem persists.

I persoanlly, would try reseating the cpu. and it could also be a powersupply problem.

AT dude - you pulled the battery, and therefoe the Bios is fubared.

from the FIC site go to the legacy mainboards, and pull down the bios setting instructions - they're complicated, and change with every mainboard - but waffle around a bit and the machine will probably run just fine - at 350mhz - i just tried the 450 angle and got no screen.

note: telling the thing to load defaults is a sure way to get the blue screen of death.



but just for grins, if you actually had the 450 running at any point - can you tell me the bus, clock and voltaghe settings you were using?
