Compaq problem

Alright, my roommate's laptop is having some problems and he's pretty clueless on what to do. Anytime he trys to play an MP3, it wont play and say the sound device is already in use. However, when he puts in a DVD and it autoplays it will say no sound device is detected and shut down. Any idea where he should start with this? His lappy is Compaq Presario 2500 series, thanks for the help.

what OS are you using ? Do you have the right drivers ?
