How much is right?

Post by cheesehead »

Just wondering, but how much is the right amount in your opinion? I always heard to use about 1/2 a 3 gram tube of the Arctic silver 5 stuff, but you probbably know better than I do.

I've used the baggy...

Post by Bigal »

...on about seven system builds now, and it works well. You only want enough thermal compound to barely cover the CPU die, and I put about the same amount on the heatsink too. The baggy allows you to toss it after you've applied the compound, so you don't need to clean up if you are careful. I also do a check fit with the compound on both the CPU and the heatsink (without using the mounting clip, of course), and this ensures you are seating the two parts properly. If you don't see some "squish" where the die meets the heatsink, then something is wrong with your mounting. Only a tiny bit of thermal compound should be moving when the two surfaces meet under pressure of the mounting clip.

The Artic Silver link above from Executioner is a very good overview, and I recommend everyone take a look at it. :D

on that chip?

Post by jayscybertrhs »

for a well-based processor, so-sorry - first build a wall from sealing wax around the chip in the center, or it wont matter how much you dont use - it will leak off and foul the leafds anyway.

then mask the rest of the unit and apply 2-3 microns more than it takes to reach the heat sink with a micro-spray.

some peeps also apply to the surround - but it has to have a void somewhere in the outer ring or it will overheat anyway (double-moat construction)
