Explorer.exe crash in WinNT 4.0

Post by Corsec »

Any ideas on how to fix it? I can't open anything. Event Viewer, User accounts / info, Email ****.

I just started working for this company and today was the first time this server has been rebooted in over 2 years.

Well unless there's some major file corruption, I smell virus. If you can boot into safe mode (and I don't even remember if NT has a safe mode) then you can check to see if there's any strange stuff in the startup.

Since NT doesn't have an MSCONFIG you'll need this handy app to check the startups: http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10252345.html

You could also pop the drive into a WinXP or 2K system that has an anti-virus app installed and scan the drive for viruses (wouldn't hurt to scan disk it as well).

I'd get the data off that drive first though in case something happens. Be prepared to do a new install and restore the files if it gets hopeless.

Is this only being used for a file server? No domain server? If so, any 2K/XP box will do for a temporary file server if you can copy the files to it, setup file sharing the same way and give it the same network name.

If you're forced to do a re-install I would DEFINATELY consider going with Win2K. NT is obsolete.
