I just got a barricade smc7004vwbr wireless router.
Out of the box with the software it wont connect to my cable modem (rogers)
Do you guys in Canada know if I should use the regular setup for a cable modem or do I choose STATIC IP and configure it manually? I thought it was set to obtain an IP address?
anyone have info or experience with this router ? Is it any good?
I am trying to use it right now with cat 5 cables not wireless yet.
thanks for any tips
Dave

Unless Roger is doing something special (I doubt it) there should be no configuration required for ANY cable modem (DSL is different).
What you probably forgot to do was to power cycle the modem. The modem is "locked" to the first MAC address it sees connected to it (your computer). If you unpugged it from the computer and connected it to the router without resetting the modem, it won't talk to the router because it doesn't recognize it's MAC address.
Just pull the power plug on the modem (don't use the power switch if there is one - it rarely resets the modem), wait 20 seconds, and plug it back in. Wouldn't hurt to do the same to the router after you reset the modem.
Remember this in case you ever need to connect it back directly to the computer (you'll need to do that if the cable company wants to troubleshoot it with you over the phone - they usually don't support routers) you'll have to do that again.
All default setting on the router will work just fine (you want it to obtain the IP automatically). The router will configure itself using DHCP. When you browse the router's control panel, check the Status page (or might be called WAN page) and you should see a lease with a recent date, an IP address, DNS address, etc. If there's no lease then click the "RELEASE" button and then click "RENEW" to manually force the router to aquire a lease from the modem (rarely necessary - it should be automatic, but sometimes it's slow to pickup the first time).
If you ever lose the connection, first thing you should try before calling support is to power cycle the modem & router.

Thanks FP I reset the modem and router.
Its weird, I can browse the net on both computers. I can access the network (shared docs etc.) only from the second computer the kids one. THis main computer wont access the files on the kids comp.
Also the status page from SMC says modem disconnected yet I am on the net using the router.
Even when I run the setup from the cd rom that came with the SMC router it says connection failed.
I dont get it....
I also got my email to work now, I found an old set of settings for the pop and smtp servers that worked.
SO I am almost there...
do I need to uninstall anything from my old network settings or run a network setup somehow to tell it that both computers are using a router now?
If this is this much trouble with wired I cant imagine how bad wireless will be...

The computer that can browse the net but can't see shared files an printers on the network almost certainly has a firewall enabled (maybe WinXP's native firewall?). A firewall will block all NetBIOS commands by default.
