Network setup- accessing files help

Post by Noncenx »

I’ve got a setup with my cable modem going into a D-Link DI-624 router with my desktop connected by Ethernet cable and have a laptop connected by a D-Link DWL-G650 wireless card. Don’t have any trouble with either accessing the internet however they cannot access files from each other.

The desktop shows the laptop as part of the network, the laptop doesn’t show the desktop. Neither can access files from the other. I set the folders I want use to be shared. Right now the settings on both are still the default settings. Both machines are running XP Pro and I’ve run the network wizard on each machine.

What am I missing here???

My first guess would be that the native Firewall in XP is on and blocking access between the machines. Try turning it off and see if that helps.

1st Off, Welcome to PCA! :)

Sorry the setup wizard didn't work, I was sure that would fix the problem. I take it you've rebooted the machines since installing the network?

I thought it might be Windows internal firewall at first so I double check that it's not selected on either machine.

Now though things seem to be going backwards. The desktop doesn't see the laptop on the network as it used to. So now neither sees the other.

Any ideas???
