Thermalright SP-97 Heatpipe Cooler

Just got this in for review, the new heatpipe cooler from Thermalright called the SP-97. Wasn't even expecting it. Merry Christmas to blade.

Haven't installed it yet but I will this weekend when I also have to change power supplies. I hate to remove my mobo for any heatsink but this one may be worth it.

I'll compare it against the slk900a, volcano 12 and the best from swiftech.

this is the AMD version? ive been using the coolermaster HHC-001 for like 2 years ever since i won it at PCA Lan and have been waiting for a new AMD heatpipe cooler. and this is IT!! Where and how much can i get one! plus this one bolts on.. the coolermaster is only a one prong clip

So now once i get one i wont have to worry about snaping the fingers off the socket! I cant wait...

I soo want one of them Zalman heatpipe cases. they woudl work so good. heat pipes are the shit. I dont know how much i can stress that. they are the inbetween from air cooling to water cooling.

Yes, this SP-97 is only for AMD. The SP-94 is for intel.

It hasn't been fully released yet and only one store that I know of currently has it, heatsinkfactory. Just 54.99.

But I'd wait till some like kdc, crazypc, svc carries it. Should be anytime.

Since that hhc-001 came out I thought heatpipes would be used much more too. It is strange that they haven't. I doubt it'll be much better than the slk900a, but we'll see. Maybe 1-3c max.

That hhc-001 was also about the last of the single clip ffrom the major makers. They learned to always use a 3 pronged clip mostly because of the weight.

I'll definitely be waiting for this review. I've already seen one pre-release review a few weeks ago and this one is looking like a real winner.

I also use one of them Zalman HP80 jobs on my video card.. and everybody thinks im crazy. others tell me that its junk and doesnt work and causes artifacts... but i can tell you they must not have installed it properly. I have it on a FX 5200 (go ahead and laff it up) which has a 250Mhz core. well i got it runnin at about 375 and its rock stable and good and cool (warm to the touch). As far as i can tell its working like a champ. I need to learn how to produce heat pipes so i can make my own stuff.

I do know sombody who made a high pressure heat pipe for an industreal laser cutter. he had a large torch on one end and the the other end in running water. the end with the torch on it had ICE falling off of it.. the water end was making lots of steam. I was amazed. That particular heat pipe was verry dangerous due to pressures and chemicals used in it. He once told me he could cool a intire warehouse with a wooden water tank and some heat pipes.

Anybody remember seeing that show petty coat junction? remember when they swam in the water tower? well i can tell you they wouldent be swimming in it because the water would be 34f. THats right. teh wood in the tank absorbs the water, the water evaporates on the outside of the tank and that cools due to it evaporating. eventually the whole tank will get down to allmost freezing. This will work on a smaller scale, but the total ammount of cooling will be decreased as well. so the only way to make it work good is to have a large tank. It did cross my mind to cool a CPU this way, but after all the math it would take a tank in the rage of 200 gallons to work.

But on a larg scale, like for cooling a warehouse in the summer... have multiple heat pipes in the house hooked to a blower to blow heat (room air) into the pipes which then go up to the water tank to get rid of the heat, and since the water tank is at allmost freezing the heat pipes will keep on sucking out heat untill the air on the hot side (in house) is as cool as the end in the water (cold side).

Just a small use for heat pipes on a large scale.

it is the #1 best heatsink. I was playing with one the other day. works Great with a QUIET fan.

I replaced my Zalman CNPS 7000A CuAl with the SP-97 and a Zalman ZM-Fs 92MM fan. With both units running at top speed I was able to drop my temps about 5° Celsius with the SP-97. The 7000A running at full CPU load was at 44 -45 while the SP-97 was 39-40.

i got my xp2500 running at 3000 (190 FSB) and its stable and under full load (FAH) and its at 111 right now and its quiet. I have the fan on its slowest setting with out it stalling.
