Ashlee Simpson's lip-sync goof on SNL...
http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/1 ... index.html
As a former sound engineer I can tell you this happens a LOT, and for fairly legit reasons.
To me it's always funny when I see anyone making a big deal out of this.
It's not unusual - especially if it's not a big gig - for a singer to lip-sync. A singer's voice is their living, and if you sing professionally it's easy to stress your voice box. I've had many singers that I've worked that would lip-sync if they were concerned about their voice and it was a simple 2 song luncheon gig. I would guess a great many singers that performed on Sat Nite Live, Letterman, etc. have lip synced since it's usually only 1 or 2 songs.
If your throat is sore, and You want to save your voice for a big concert the next day, for instance. Better than risking damage to your voice box and being out of business for a week.
Happens all the time. I USUALLY got a heads up a day before the gig but I usually used to bring a reel to reel 4 channel tape recorder (it's done with computers now) with me on most quickie gigs just to be prepared for that eventuality. If you're a sound man it's common practice, you just never mention names or talk about it much since you don't EVER want it being known you ratted out a performer - and then lose work because of it.
She'll actually be singing usually - it's VERY difficult to lipsync WITHOUT actually singing, but if your mike isn't hot you don't have to sing hard and damage your voice, and you don't have to strain for high notes, etc.
Yeah, the audience is getting gyped, but if it's Sat Night Live you're not just there for the band - the band is filler. Where you don't want to see this happen is a full-blown concert and to be honest I've never had a performer lip-sync on anything other than a short 1 or 2 song gig.

Someone screweded up, easier to blame it on the band. That's what they get paid for. In actuality it was the sound engineer's fault unless (sometimes) the keyboardist is running the sync track (sometimes instead of a PC they just use a sampling keyboard).

Now Simpson and her daddy are blaming acid reflux disease for 'SNL' Lip-Synch gaffe

Simpson has since been widely attacked for the snafu, with an interview she gave to Lucky magazine coming back to haunt her. When asked what her take on lip-synching was, she had told the magazine, "I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going to let my real talent show, not just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me."

They continued, but Lorne went to commercial. They didn't hire Simpson's band to play.Originally posted by Hipnotic_Tranz
Now that I think about it, it is the bands fault. Their fault for not taking advantage of the situation by rockin' out when she got off stage![]()
SNL is a huge platform for artists. Because of the "L", it's like a test of how good you can be. And there was a time years ago when SNL said it was live, or it didn't go on stage.
Her dad took the cheap way, saying she had some "acid reflex" that made her voice hoarse. Just another of several excuses that the Simpson camp can't agree on. The problem was only compounded by the fact that she said a month or so ago in a mag interview that lip-syncing was not an option...actually using the word "offensive" if I remember correctly.
I used to sing hard rock in bar bands, three to four nights a week. None of that sissy-ass sh!t she's getting tons of money for...I did Zep, Rush, Halen, Scorps, etc. My voice was toast on Monday morning, but I got back on stage Thursday or Friday for that next weekend's gig. Did this for over three years. Poor baby can't sing two songs for a national audience? She should have canceled, but the Simpson camp was obviously too concerned about the national exposure to do that. And if not cancel, she should have sucked it up, realized there was a mistake, and played thru it...the band did. Even Lorne got it wrong by saying she should have taken charge and started over...you don't start over, this is a live performance, you play thru it.
Would she have sounded bad? Maybe. Would it be because of acid reflex or the other excuses? Perhaps. Would she have earned some respect and looked like a pro? You answer that one.
I have zero sympathy for her.

Because it was the drummer's job to start the appropriate track. He forgot to change tracks so when he hit PLAY, the wrong song started. She did an interview on the Today show this AM blaming the acid reflux thing mentioned above.Originally posted by Hipnotic_Tranz
Why's she bein' a bitch and blaming the band though?
