Using my spare rig in the garage, I was trying to install some packet writing software from Nero (InCD), and I could not get it to work properly with my SCSI Plextor 12/4/32 burner. So I pressed the power switch to turn of the machine and remove the Plextor and replace it with another one. Press the power on switch and nothing.
It was the 300w power supply. So I replaced it with another one, but now my Voodoo3 graphics card did not work. So I replaced it with another Voodoo3 and got it to display on the monitor, but now my floppy drive does not work. Replaced it with another.
When all said and done, I lost 3 components, and I have no idea as to why. All I did was to press the power switch to turn it off.
BTW, Nero's packet writing software, InCD, is a POS. I found a copy of Roxio's DirectCD version 5, and it works great on the same drive that InCD would not work.
Lost 3 components yesterday

Props for killing the floppy.
That just seems like it should be hard to do. I've never had a floppy develop a problem that a good cleaning couldn't cure.
This reminds me of the time a lightning strike took out my DSL modem & nic card. I was using an old 486 as a firewall/fileserver/router machine (running Linux), so I had the DSL plugged into the 486 and the 486 plugged into my hub. I was using an old isa ethernet card w/ BNC and AUI ports, and an external transceiver to connect it to 10 base-T ethernet from the DSL modem. The Modem and NIC got fried, but by some miracle the transceiver survived. AFAIK it still works. I had several identical ethernet cards around, so I just swapped the card & got a new modem from my ISP & everything was happy.
I have a surge protector on my DSL line now. It may not completely stop a ligning strike, but I'm hoping it'll clamp down enough that it just kills the DSL modem (I've got a spare one) and doesn't fry the dual P3 1.0 I'm using as a firewall/file server/router box now.

Had one guy's power supply wipe EVERYTHING except the speakers and monitor out. That leaves everything inside the case and the mouse and keyboard.
First time I ever heard of a PS wiping out a mouse and KB
