servers...what's the biggest/baddest you've used?
we always talk about desktops here...i know there are some server guys on here too. what is the standard equipment you deal with? what is the most powerful server setup you've seen in person?
my company doesn't have anything super...just mid-level HP/Compaq servers...1U DL360 G3/4's, etc. biggest array is 1TB.
i've never seen a monster setup, really...

We have an Apple X-Serve at the office with something like 500Gb of storage. I avoid that as much as possible simply b/c I don't want my boss to think that I like it
Our workhorse is a dual MP 1600+, 1Gb RAM, 15k RPM U3W SCSI storage. Hosts our web site, databases, etc. We have two other smaller servers that do email and FTP.

Lets see... what i have here... a dual 350 celly thats basicly just a print server that does nothing but fold. A dual P3 550 that has a rocket raid card and 4 160G running it RAID 5 for 447 gigs of space. then a Dell Poweredge 4350 with dual 650 and 2 gig of ram. It does my BT and DC
for me. It has 17 gigs of space on 3 scsi drives that are alos raided 5.
Other then that at work we have a Octo processor comcrap. Its got 550's in it and like 4 gig of ram. does excell and E2 stuff. Its like 16U and has like 25 drives in it.

best one I ever saw was circa 1982 - taking my first puter course - nite school at some gov agency in dc - as a treat they took us into the back in the cold room where they had two ! 40 mb hard drives.......back then, that was liking seeing the space shuttle...hehe

I work on two servers at work- the main workhorse is a compaq ml570 with dual xeon 2.0 cpus
and a raid 5 array- total storage is only 300 gigs
Second is a citrix server running a single p4 3.2 .
Really its the 20 or so workstations and 11 laptops which are the pains in the asses, the server rarely gives me greif

The Sun Fire E25K server is Sun's massively scalable, highly available flagship data center server that scales up to 72 UltraSPARC IV processors with chip multithreading technology executing 144 simultaneous computing threads. With these processors plus new hsPCI+ I/O assemblies, the Sun Fire E25K provides up to twice the compute density in the same footprint and enhanced I/O performance for lower total cost of ownership. The Sun Fire E25K supports over 1/2 TB of memory per domain, making it ideal for mainframe migration, consolidation, decision-support, and other memory-intensive applications. High availability is delivered through Full Hardware Redundancy, fault-isolated Dynamic System Domains, and Dynamic Reconfiguration for hot swapping key server components while applications are up and running, for higher availability. Investments are protected with the ability to mix and manage UltraSPARC IV and UltraSPARC III processors--running at their rated speed--in the same system. This server comes remote-services ready for preemptive support and preloaded with a rich set of applications with the Java Enterprise System. This server is available in the Sun Customer Ready Systems (CRS) program for factory integration into ready-to-deploy, customer-specific solutions.
Specifications
* Number of processors : Up to 72
* Architecture : UltraSPARC IV and UltraSPARC III Cu, superscalar SPARC V9, ECC-protected
* Cache per processor : Level 1: parity-protected 64-KB instruction and 128-KB data on chip (Single-bit errors are corrected)
Level 2: ECC-protected 16-MB external cache
* Capacity : More than 1/2 TB memory in a single domain
* Capacity : Up to 18 fifth-generation fault-isolated Dynamic System Domains
* Capacity : Hot-swappable Uniboard CPU/memory boards, I/O, MaxCPU boards, power, fans
* CPU/Memory Boards : Up to 18 Uniboard CPU/memory boards with four processors each, and up to 32 GB per board; maximum 576 GB per domain
* System Interconnect : 150-MHz Sun Fireplane redundant 18x18 data, address, and response crossbar interconnect.
* Dynamic System Domains : Up to 18 domains allows secure, fault-isolated, dynamic partitioning of resources within a single server
* Operating System : Solaris 8 Operating System (02/04); Solaris 9 Operating System (04/04 or later)
* Upgrades : The Sun Upgrade Advantage Program (UAP) offers trade-in value for qualified Sun and competitive servers towards the purchase of replacement Sun Fire E25K servers. Whether upgrading one system or consolidating many systems to one, Sun UAP offers the flexibility to trade-in systems and receive credit towards the new Sun system purchased. Upgrades are also available for Sun Fire server system component upgrades including CPU/memory boards, and I/O assemblies.

The new one thats Also going to be a Game server is : An Asus PC-DL Deluxe with Dual 2.66GHz Xeons with an Adaptec 2100-S with 128megs Cache, 1gig Ram (We are trying to upgrade to 4gigs ECC with it), A GeForce FX5900XT w/128megs Ram, A PVR-250 TV analog Captur Card (wonder full litel unit !), 40Gig Maxtor O/S Drive, 3* 9.2 Gig RAID 5 Array for the Game servers (Quantume Atlas 10KII Series Drives) Plus 1 cold spare, (We're upgrading thoughs to 4* 36Gig 10Krpm Maxtors 68pin Ultra-320s, plus 1 Cold Spare)
WTF does a game server need a 5900 for? Or a tv card. Some of my servers dont even have a video card in them. And the ones that do all have POS 2 meg cards. Serriously all i have hooked up to them is power and network.
