What LCD monitor to buy?

Post by Executioner »

I'm going to be in the market for a new LCD monitor for myself. The last time I bought a monitor was back in 1997, a CTX 17". Now approaching the half century mark, I need a better monitor for my eyes. I don't need the best thing out there, but a 19" would do just fine. I play games, but I'm not a hard core gamer. I have an ATI Redeon 9600 Pro, and I mainly play TFC, Pain Killer, or HL2.

1. How important is the response time?
2. Refresh rate?
3. Pixel?

What about wide screen LCD's? Anyone here using one that they like, and what do you like about it?

if you are going larger because your eyes are smaller (hehe my problem too) remember that LCD monitors do not like to be moved off their native resolution - I play 1024 on a 19" (and I still need mild reading glasses) because that is my comfort zone...I would strongly recommend you go to a store where you can actually look at the display before chunking down the cash...with a crt you can always tweak it to whatever is comfortable without any loss of crispness

I have THAT monitor and it's GREAT for gaming so hopefully you can get it at a good sale price like that. I have no regrets about mine whatsoever.

If you get to a Bestbuy, look at the 21" flatscreens too as those look great BUT very pricey.

Spent some time looking last night at monitors, and my ATI 9600 does not support the wide screen resolution. So it looks like I'll be getting a 19" instead.

That's really weird Ex, my AIW 9000 Pro supports the widescreen resolutions, I would have certainly thought that any cards above it would have done that. I've been looking at getting one of the large widescreen monitors to replace my 21" CRT, but just can't see dropping that kind of dough.. hehe.. Well, good luck with your choices and I hope you find one that makes you happy! :D

Thanks for the link. Do you mean "had" or "have"? If you still have it forsale, I would be intrested.

EGO: I went to Dell's site, and they have a link that checks your compatability to run wide screen, and my card was not listed. I was looking at this wide screen model for just under $500:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/cate ... l=en&s=dhs

Then if you click on this link:
javascript :w inopen('http://www1.us.dell.com/content/learnmo ... T=0,TOP=20');
My Redeon 9600 pro is not listed, but it's listed for notebook pc's. What's the difference?

You've got me.. Maybe it's a more up to date version.. I saw that my video card only supports the 2405 not the 2005.. I wonder if ATI could release a firmware update to fix that or if it is completely hardware related..

Hard decision to make, but I just bought this LG:

A close second was the Hyundai that bellringer mentioned.

Yeah I saw that one also, but going from 19 to 20 inches, they wanted ~$200 more so I did not think it was worth the extra $$$ for only one inch more.

Just got my new monitor, and I can't believe the difference, especially when using the digital cable connection. I tried both, but the digital was 50% better than the analog.

See no different in games, except that they are very bright. For some reason, the monitor ships with the brightness at 100. I've adjusted to 50 and it's still bright. The only bummer is I have one dead pixel.

Don't know if it's worth sending it back or not for one dead pixel.

Man, that's a bummer :( I would certainly see what their dead pixel policy is.. Some companies wont' take them back unless there are like 7 dead pixels... :(
