Built a New System

Post by Schwartz »

I had my Q6600 @ 3.6 for over 2 years and decided it was time to build a new system. I know I really didn't need to but I couldn't stop the urge to build. :)

Here is what I threw together:

Coolermaster HAF922 Case
Asus P6X58D Premium Motherboard
Intel i7-930 CPU
XFX ATI HD5870
Corsair HX750W Power Supply
12GB 2GBx6 G.Skill F3-12800CL8TU-6GBPI
Patriot Torqx 128GB SSD
Patriot Convoy bay to hold the Torqx and another 2.5" drive if I choose.
WD Black WD1002FAEX 1TB SATA 3 64GB
Thermalright Venomous X Heatsink
Noctua fans all around other than the HAF922's included 200mm fans.
I use an external DVD drive so I didn't get any optical drives.

I really like the HAF922, it has plenty of room to work in and run cables. It seems to keep things nice and cool and it is pretty quiet with the large fans and Noctua fans working together. I have the i7 930 running at 4.2Ghz right now with HT on. It took a little playing with to get prime running happily for extended periods but I think I have it now. 1.35V on the core seemed to be the magic number for 4.2Ghz.

Thoughts? Anything I should add or change?

Kinda hard to knock that build. Price is the only thing that keeps me going a similar direction. Major props to you for quality wiring. Kills me to see people dump over $1000 into a computer & leave the wires looking like a rats nest. I'll give you my address so you know where to send your old Q6600 :)

Thanks guys, I kept the wires that I could together and hid and tied them out of sight. I couldn't really do anything with the header bracket wires from the rear because of their short length and they are on the opposite side of the mobo. I left the CPU fan wires exposed on purpose in case I need to mess with anything there but they are all sleeved so they don't look too bad.

I had it running prime for about 4 hours last night at 4.2Ghz before I shut it down and went to bed. I shut it down so the Arctic Silver 5 will cure. So I won't say its 100% stable yet but it seems to be on track.

Yeah, darn header wires, always too short.

4.2ghz, nice work. That's on the upper end of the clocks I've seen with air cooling.
