Truck Sound System Woofer Shreds Phone Book

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I'm trying to decide what's more stupid: the fact that the woofers in this truck are capable of shredding a phone book (and probably your ear drums), or that this sound system is so idiotically over-powered, that it requires FOUR alternators...

I've always wanted to laugh my ass off if I ever saw a car come apart due to something as stupid as this.

And I bet the rest of the system can't keep up with the output from the subs so it will over all sound like shit. I have a 600 watt setup in my beetle with a single sealed 10" in the trunk and nice components in the doors and back. The amp is a nice 400W for the sub and 4x50 for the rest. It is nice and balanced and can get plenty loud in the car with out the whole neighborhood knowing about it.

I find the 4 alternators a bit hard to swallow as I've never seen any modern day car with that much extra room under the hood.

That looks like a Yukon. I have a 2013 Yukon and there is a LOT of empty space under the hood, even with that big motor. That's one of the few vehicles you could getaway with that.

But it's crazy. There's 10 batteries in that car. Honestly, if your sound system needs that much juice, you are stone deaf (or will be soon).

After a certain point bass that loud begins to physically hurt my ears. My system if turned up higher then I would ever like to run it can just about get me to that point. My friends systems back in the day did it to me all the time and I would refuse to ride with them unless they turned it down.

I love being able to sit at the parking garage at the airport when I am too early for a flight and just nap while some Floyd plays. I have yet to date find any recordings as good as that.

I simply don't get it. Why spend all that money for your car, when you can spend it for your house and have a kick-ass system instead that sounds better than any car setup.

These guys aren't interested in how it sounds as long as it's loud. Often they don't even listen to music in these setups. They use tone CDs to get the maximum SPL for contests. The amount of money that's in that truck would buy a mid-range HiFi system with all components included or a very good home theater including a projector.

I used to know a guy who was into this in High School (early 90's). It got old fast. My Charger came with a Boston Acoustics system with factory sub and it's good enough for my daily commute.

Don't get me wrong, there is money to be made doing this if you are good at it.

Years ago I threw together a system in a car that was the best I ever had. All Alpine except the sub and sub amp.
It would go so loud that you could get an instant headache and was louder than most outdoor rock shows being close to the stage. Stuff would be bouncing around on the floor, etc
and it was fine with the stock alternator/battery. I can't imagine needing more power than that. The closest system I ever heard in a stock car was in a $95K BMW (back in ~95).
