New Google Nexus 5X

Got my new phone and it's pretty sweet. Pure Android, so it's fast and not bloated. I'll update this once I play with it more and receive my new SIM card for the Google Fi service, which I'm trying out. Only negative is that I need to buy some new USB C cables, for the office and car.

This thing covers a crap-load of bands, hence for it to work the Google Fi service.

I just hate how all new phones have gone to fixed batteries and have eliminated the SD card slot.

Yeah, but that's become the norm to keep things small.
I hated it too but have gotten used to it. Plus the battery life on these new units is pretty damn amazing.

I have to wait to till my wife's contract finishes up next year. We're probably going to switch back to AT&T as they are cheaper for having our 3 phones on the same plan with more data than Verizon. I also want to be able to easily buy a Nexus phone and use. Getting a Nexus on Verizon is a pain and also more expensive.

I would look at Google Fi then. 3 phones would be $20/mo each phone plus data at $10/GB.

They aren't doing family plans yet. It's $60/mo EACH with $10/GB. I'll see what I do. I know my contract is up in a few months, so I might try Google Fi and see how it goes. At least with the phone if I'm not happy, I can just switch it to AT&T.

Sorry. When I said $60, I was adding up your three phones (3 x $20).

Google Fi is $20 plus data per phone. I use on average about 1.5 GB so I should be seeing a monthly of about $35 plus tax.

Yea, we use a lot more data than 1GB per month. With all 3 of us, we'd need about 10GB per month. So right there, that's potentially $160 with Google Fi. AT&T would be $145 with 15GB per month.

So you've had the phone now for about a month. What's your thoughts on it? What other phone did you have before that you are comparing with?

I'm totally loving the phone. The fingerprint reader is wicked fast. Easy to get into the phone. Security has been improved as well. battery life is great on this phone. I hit it hard for about 2 to 2.5 days until it says it's dead and needs to be charged. I'm old school and take my batteries down to the last drop.

Charging though is wicked fast normally and if you have like a 2amp charger, you'll be at 95% in about an hour. I've timed it too.

I had the older Nexus 5, the Older Nexus 6 and a Samsung Galaxy S3.

The only things that could be negative: (depending on how you look at it) are:

1) They no longer support wireless charging. This was done to keep the phone slim while giving it a larger battery. Apparently their studies showed that people were willing to give that up.

2) You'll need a couple of new cables for the car, work, etc... This phone takes the new USB C which is reversible. I love not having to check the cable's orientation.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I decided to stick with T-Mobile after i told them I was leaving and they gave me a $100/mo plan for both of us with unlimited data plus all the Intl data roaming and other extras. No throttling or gimmicks. Just unlimited data, talk & text plus Intl texting as well.

I highly recommend the phone. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

ok thanks. My used replacement S4 is on the fritz. Power button got stuck (known defect), and I was able to get it unstuck. But now it seems stuck again. Thankfully it's not causing issues like before. Problem is, I'm scared that if the phone ever loses complete power or if I need to swap out the battery that it won't turn on again because the power button is messed up hehe.

I have to check the cancellation amounts since it's prorated to see what it would cost me to get out of Verizon. AT&T is offering us $300 for each line we move over (bringing our own phone) since we're DirecTV customers. I'd be buying the 5X myself.

I'll have to look into this phone. Still happy with my Gen1 Moto-X, but I've got the itch. Going to also look at the Moto-X Gen 3 and the Nexus 6p (I'm leaning towards wanting a larger screen).

I love pure Android. I regret having purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet a few years back (I use it as the car tablet and it stays in the car connected to a charger). Great screen and performance, but the Samsung UI sucks balls. Next Android tablet will likely be a Nexus, unless I give up on Android entirely for tablets. I love Android on a phone but I really have fallen in love with my Surface RT and Surface Pro. I find Android on a tablet rather limited by comparison.

The Nexus line has been good to us the last few years. No complaints and it's nice to have pure Android.

The Moto line is nice but I prefer to have pure Android and for some reason, the Motorola phones (at least in the past) had issues connecting to Exchange servers. Email was flaky and unreliable. iPhone was better.

On this phone, I use an email app called TypeMail. It handles Exchange, Yahoo, etc... and combines them all if you want. Basically like the iPhone handles email only more robust, as Apple tends to keep things plain Jane, to make tings idiot proof.

When I ordered my Nexus 5x they gave me a $50 credit in the Play Store. Don't know if that's still going on though.

Just got my Nexus 5X activated. Wasn't too bad. Just went in to the Verizon store, we tested using one of their activated nano sim cards from a display phone and it worked. So the guy went to the back and brought me a new one and activated. A lot better than initial reports when the phone first came out.

So far I love the fingerprint scanner, but hate that the Home Page is stuck on the left page. I'm used to having a page to the left and to the right of the home page.

That might be my only MINOR gripe but I've gotten used to it. The phone is wicked fast to unlock and feels good in my hand. I'm still looking for a good case. The one I have is OK but nothing spectacular. It was one fo the few that were avail at the time.
