Nexus 5X on AT&T

So I have a Nexus 5X that I bought from Google and I have it activated on Verizon. Everything works fine on Verizon with the exception of Voicemail notifications, they come in as these funky text messages and I just haven't gotten around to contact Verizon about it. Anyways, I'm looking at moving my family over to AT&T since we have DirecTV in hopes that we'll get it discounted as well as applying my wife's employee discount (her bank has their contract with AT&T). One thing I'm concerned about is tethering. On Verizon, the Google Nexus tethering works perfectly without needing any 3rd party software installed. I'm trying to find out if it's the same for AT&T. I know that if you buy a phone from them, it's locked down and does the check to see if you account has tethering enabled.

You can download the Verizon Voicemail app from the Play Store. Dunno how tethering works on AT&T. I use Verizon and I like that the Wifi hotspot is easy to use.

I think you have to have tethering enabled on your account. Not sure as my current phone is through my old work so I dont manage the account. I do know I just enable tethering when I need it.

They have so many apps, can you tell me it's specific name? maybe a screenshot so I can see what it looks like? Also, this isn't the visual one that they charge you monthly for right?

I have an older Iphone (5 maybe??) and the tethering works fine, on my wife's acct so I'm not sure if it has to be turned on intentionally.

k, that's for Motorola. The Verizon one that shows up for my phone is the Visual Voice mail which requires a monthly $2.99 subscription, no way I'm going to pay monthly to access my voice mail in an app.

Mine is also a subscription, but you get the first 30 days for free. After that, if you don't subscribe, my understanding is it reverts to basic features: no transcription for instance.

I grumbled about the idea of the subscription at first, but the ability to read a transcript of the voice mail is really worth it, and the transcription is usually pretty good.

For a long time I just dialed *86 for my voice mails, but after the last Android update, whatever built-in Verizon app that gave me voice mail notifications stopped working so they told me to download this app, and I got notifications back, and then I got spoiled being able to play back messages without calling them, and being able to read the transcripts.

I've found that tethering on the Nexus phones just works. I've never had to subscribe to anything. I just turn it on and it works. I'm currently on T-Mobile but it has worked on AT&T as well.

ok thanks. I guess Nexus phones from Google don't report to the carrier to check if tethering is allowed and just do it.

That has been my experience with them. Since they're unlocked and pure Android, these features are available and the carrier hasn't removed them or made them subscription based.
