DON'T DO IT!

Post by tsbrewers »

Hey Splitfire, don't do it man, when you get the HT bug, you will be forever lost! First comes a cheap receiver, then better speakers, then a bigger tv. Soon you are maxing out the cards on Denon 5800 receivers, front projectors, building speakers in the garage, mounting bass shakers under all the seats, IT NEVER ENDS!!!! :-) I am in the middle of a hard battle to get out of the loop, but I am trying. :-)

Hey Uberneuman, if you get any donations, be sure to take care of that burning problem first! Heh heh. That was funny doode!

Me, I'm never satisfied. PIII 850@952 running an Ultra. I'm still not totally happy with the way some games run at what I want to play them at. Seems no matter what you got, some game will still put the choke on it. Now maybe if it ever came to a point that one could play ANY game at 1600x1200x32 or 1024x768x32 with max FSAA, maximum eye candy settings, at 100 fps with NO slowdowns under any circumstances, I would be content.

Of course I can dream can't I?

Sometimes with all the bucks I have forked over on this obsession, oops I mean hobby, I think I should have taken up fishing!

Oh boy, i'm getting it again...building a new computer (old one is a c366 -> 605), just went to the local computer show and just HAD to look around and sure enough found a TB 1 GHz marked AXIA for $179...oh well. The case comes next week (leaving my celly in the LiteOn FS020 w/ 400 watt PS), then I take my brand new birdie and Crucial PC133 Cas2 for a ride until something starts burning...

I'm getting giddy just thinking about it. Add one brand new ThermoEngine, a delta fan, some silver compound, blue ord chipset cooler, new 64mb Radeon and a new 12.10.32 Iomega/Plextor... 1,500 MHz here I come! Whoopieeeee!

I recently went from 350 to 600 (my P2B-LS can't do Coppermine), added an IBM 30G drive, and put in another 256 megs. A little before that, I went to 19".

But I'm still running with a Marvel G200 and SLI. Can't upgrade to a G400 or G450 Marvel, cuz Matrox shoved their heads up their arse with VT, and now only support single stream audio w/PC-VCR (which essentially turns PCI soundcards into ISA soundcards). This also results in that I'm still using 4.33 drivers. Can't upgrade to a Radeon AIW, since it only support WDM, and ATI shoved their collective heads up a single arse and didn't write a VFW wrapper (and may never will).

In fact, I'm so fed up with video card manufacturers right now, I placed a bid for the SDRAM upgrade for my G200, just so I can get past 1280x1024 in 16-bit.

Next year, maybe I'll build another from scratch.

So, with an itch, I got muhself an iPAQ 3635 last week.

Is there a performance jump going from 256 to 512 megs of RAM?

In Winbloze 98 you won't see a difference. If your running NT or 2k you should notice some performance increase. I've got that bug too. I ain't ever happy. Kinda poor so my upgrades are from seriously obsolete to obsolete. Best thing in my system is my 16x Toshiba DVD and 12x10x32 Iomega/Plextor burner. Rest is just pretty generic with a Geforce SDR(My Hercules Geforce DDR w/ tv-out will be here tomorrow!) Cel 566@952 and a CUSL2-C. I thought about gettin' a P3 but this Celermine has done everything i want it to do. All the games i play my vid card does fine on. The naked eye can't see much past 15 frames a second anyways and if i can run with all eye candy turned on at 30fps consitantly i'm happy. That vid card will probably be my last upgrade until winter gets here. Its almost summer so i gotta dump all my money into getting my truck up and running so i can go 4byin' this summer. Oh yeah and camping too. Nothing like the smell of a campfire and good ole Bud Light that relax's a man!!

I'm cured.

Used to upgrade a lot but now don't bother too much, I've had a Geforce DDR in there for quite a while now and Athlon 800 for even longer. Everything works fine so no big need to change.

I have never had the bug--never had the money to support the habit, so its never been an option. I do however like getting quality parts off you upgrade madmen for discounted prices ;) I don't mind being a step or two behind SotA as long as my games run smoothly (and the bank account remains in the black).
