A$$! I swear; I think I should be a rude, listens to his music loud and pays attention to nobody--typicall teenager. Seems everytime I do something to help somebody out, it comes back and bites me in the ass.

For instance. There is this old couple across the street that I started cutting their grass for them, because the older guy had an accident or something and was told to never walk again (he is walking now though). So, they asked if I could do cut their grass for a summer just so they could get back on their feet. (this was last summer) Ok, that's fine. I have no problem with that.

Now they come up to my mom just now and ask if I can go cut their grass (which implies to me; I do it once, I do it 'till winter again). Now, this yard is hell, let me tell you. It is WAAYYY overgrown with sh*t everywhere. It's a real pain and the place looks like a wreck. It's not so much that I'm kinda lazy; it's the fact that it takes the same amount of time to cut their grass that it does to cut ours and our yard is probably twice the size of theirs and I get paid d*ck because I feel bad charging them what its worth.

I need to get rid of this thing people call a "conscience"

[/rant]

[edit]
let me point out that it was LAST summer that I cut it. This is starting the new summer in which I didn't think I would have to cut it. I would have thought they would have hired somebody by now!

No, a conscience is a good thing, it's just that letting people take advantage of you is a bad thing. Tell them what you think your time and effort is worth, work something out, and if you can't agree then no more cutting the grass for them...

tunis5000 - I dunno, I don't have enough will-power to go up to them and demand more money. It's not that I think I'm getting totally ripped off or anything ($10); I mean, I get paid less to do my own grass and its larger (then again they are my parents so I owe it to 'em); it's just that I was under the impression that I would do it for one summer, one summer only and by next summer; they would have found somebody that could do it permanantly. I guess I'm the 'permanant' one :(

Reason #1 to go to college...

Unless they are on a fixed income, which a lot of us old farts are.

HT, talk to them about it. Tell them that you would like to have more money if possible. Ask your mom if she knows "how rich they are". I was in a similar posistion when I was your age. I politely told the lady that in order for me to continue to mow her yard I would have to raise my price. I ended up getting $5 more.

Good Luck Nate. :)

HT, here's what you do. Tell them you can get other gigs that pay better for the time involved and you need the money for college savings. So if you do it, you gotta have a bit more then 10 bucks. Most yard services charge a minimum of $30. Explain this and tell them you'll give them a break at $20 a pop. You'll be doing them a favor still and at least getting decent wages.

There is nothing wrong with helping someone when they need it, but when those people start to take advantage of you then it's a problem. what you can do is tell them to clean the ard first, then you will mw the grass. that way, they do some of the work, and don't put everything on you.

I guess I'll just tell 'em what I thought was gonna happen. Just say I figured they would have hired somebody by now. I can mow it for a few months, but I should be getting a job soon for summer and that I won't have the time to cut their grass or something.

I dunno....it is money and every bit helps. Maybe I'm just complaining....

Kakarot - I think about that when I'm doing it for them; yet it seems its hard as hell to find a teenager now that's willing to do stuff for other people. So will there be any when I get old? I doubt it. So there, I've done it for nothing and it comes back to bite me in the a$$ ;)

Ah, I guess not. I believe in the whole Karma theme about how if you do good things now, they will come back to you. I'll do it 'till I get a job or something. Probably continue anyway depending how how my job is....
