Post by tyler_durden »

i have (was given) a p 133 with a 1.55 gig hd and a 5x cdrom. I reallu dont know what i should do with it. I already have a second computer that i use to run linux. This is really too slow to use it for anything usefull. Anyone have any ideas? I would also be willing to sell it.

Sell is as a cheap email/browser system.

Install 98 in it and then use Tweak UI to disable IE Desktop Enhancements (this slows Windows down a lot on old systems).

Disable all visual effects in display properties, setup the explorer windows to use Classic Windows look, disable all web effects in Explorer, and disable toolbars, navigation buttons and url box in Explorer (basically streamline the OS to look and run like 95).

Set desktop color to 256.

Install NOTHING but IE 5 & Outlook. Don't install any backround apps - run the system as clean as possible. No Virus scanner either.

It'll work fine as a basic web browser. I don't recommend running AOL or Juno on it.

By itself, it's probably worth nothing.

However, if you set up a stable router and caching firewall on it, and put it in a very small case, it could be worth $300 or more.

Similarily, although this would require a lot of time and money, you could make it an mp3 player for a car.

Heck around here lots of retired folks looking for cheap computers to browse with. With a monitor it's worth at least $150 if it'll run a browser. If you got it for nothing, then that's better than nothing.

i like the rearview mirror idea... maybe rebadge your car :D i have a 386dx chip that would be about par with the '87 lebaron gts i drive: old and slow!

old simms work great for keychains. youre going to have a hell of a time drilling holes in those chips though. maybe you could just solder some rings on.
there are two loves in my life: fast computers and faster cars.
