Does anyone have this problem in W2K ???

Post by Kazer »

I restart or startup my PC and wait til W2K is finished loading. If I try to open SiSoft Sandra or Aol or whatever it takes quite a while to actually open. Nothing shows up, open task manager and the program I started up isn't listed in the applications tab yet. After about 30 seconds it starts up, the time varies though. If I have had my PC on for around 30 minutes or so the problem does not occur.

Can anyone tell me what would cause this ? It's not a really big problem but it does get annoying.

That happens with me with Outlook on occasion. I can't figure it out either. Usaully I and up clicking the shortcut another two or three times before I realize what is going on. Then when I look at task manager, there are three or four instances of outlook running. When I kill the rest of them, thre first one ops right up. Go figure...
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I'd say something is running in the background that comes up on startup that's tying up the CPU for a while until it times out.

Next time it happens, run the Taskmanager and see if there's a process other than "Idle" using most of the CPU cycles. If so, that's your culprit.

If Outlook locks up while trying to do a mail download it'll often leave an instance of itself running even though you close it and will cause exactly what you've described.

A frozen FTP app will do it too - I've had it happen with Download Accelerator.

Splitfire, haha, same here. Next thing I know 3 SiSoft Sandra's open up or whatever program I clicked on a couple times.

FlyingPenguin, well the only thing that really starts up at the beginning is F@H but I've had this problem ever since I installed W2K for the first time and not because of F@H. When I look at my Task Manager I should be seeing some cpu usage because I just opened something but it shows as pretty much idle. Also it's not every single program, just certain ones.

Sounds like a service in W2K has gone wonky. When you start up, run taskmanager, and look to see what is using the CPU, also check your event log to see if there has been any warnings or errors in the system or application logs. The other thing is to make sure you have your SP's and hotfixes up to date. Hopefully one of those things will solve or find what is going on.

Cheers
