Any good recipes for college people?

Post by R-TYPE »

I'm starving here and I can't cook to save my life. Anyone have some simple and cheap recipes that helped them get through college without starving? Any recipies for Ramen to Macaroni & cheeze would be cool or even something or extravagant like SPAM :D .

:) that's pretty funny R-type, I got one for ya. Can of cream of anything soup, chicken, mushroom, whatever suits your fancy. Take any cut of meat, pork chop, chopped steak, whatever. Add a little pepper on it, a dab of margarine in the frying pan. Brown it a bit under medium heat, throw the soup on it, turn heat to low, cover it, and simmer for about 20 minutes. Add a little water, just a dab, to keep it from getting dry if need be. Voila' ! A meal fit for a "add your own metaphor here" :)

Ramen, lots of Ramen.

Actually, I have a really good dorm recipe. Lipton makes these little pouches of alfredo noodles that go for about $1. Cook it in the microwave, in tupperware or something. Once it is done, add a can of tuna (like $.40) Voila, instant tuna helper.

So.. for under $2 and about 15 minutes, you have a pretty big meal. Oh, and the prices are American.

You must have a micro wave? Heck I'd die quickly without mine. If I can't micro wave it then the heck with it. For cheap gourme meals go to wal mart and get the beef and chedder melt in the frozen food section and add a spice called "season all". The beef and chedder meal is just 86 cents while the season all is 98 cents and it will last a long time. Add rolls to make it complete. Also at wal mart their frozen 76 cent single serve pizza is good too. It's usually close to the chedder melt. All cheap, but good. :D

And no damn dishes to clean up or any mixing required! :B

- Chicken flavored Ramen Noddles
- 3/4 lb hamburger
- Ginger
- Frozen mixed or stri-fry vegetables
- Green Onion (optional)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 cup water

Brown the beef in a skillet. Using a slotted spoon, remove the beef from the skillet leaving behind the drippings. Sprinkle half the seasonings that came with the noodles on the beef. Set the beef aside. Add the water, soy sauce, ginger, and the remaining half of the chicken seasoning to the skillet. Bring to a boil and then add the noodles. Cover and simmer for two minutes. Add the vegetables. When the vegetables are cooked, add the beef back into the skillet. Heat through. Add chopped geen onion on top.

Recipe for S.O.S. "same ole s***"

my grandfather was a mess sergeant in the army and made this all the time for me.

1. get a pound of ground beef thawed.
2. brown it in a saucepan.
3. take out the ground beef, but leave the oil/grease in.
4. add a half stick of butter and maybe half a cup of flour.
5. brown this and keep stirring until you get a thick gravy.
6. add the ground beef back in and add salt to your liking.
7. simmer on med.

oh man, this stuff is so thick, and it sticks to your ribs.
its great on toast or however you want to eat it.

definitely filling!

ramen, the only way to go when u're in college! although i'm not keen on those alfredo pouches... i'd cut up some spam and crack an egg into that for a real meal! :D

1. Brown either ground beef or thin chicked strips
2. Pour in some enchilda sauce and simmer for 5 minutes
3. Line center of soft taco sized tortillas with the cooked beef
4. Sprinkle in some grated cheese
5. Wrap up and place in casserole dish
6. Pour more sauce and cheese on top of enchiladas
7. Bake at 350 until cheese has melted
8. (optional) Serve enchiladas on a bed of chopped lettuce

It sounds complicated but you end up with enough leftovers to last you days.

Two words, Ground Beef.
It's versatile and very cheap. I practically lived off it while I was a student.

Add some breadcrumbs and an egg white and shape into burgers.
Brown in a pan and and jar of bolognese sauce. Cook some spaghetti and you have spaghetti bolognese.
Brown in a pan, add some kidney beans and hot chilli powder. Serve with rice.
Brown in a pan with onions, crumble a stock cube over it, thicken with flour and water mix. Put in a dish and place pie crust on top (Can buy them ready made). Cook until pie crust goes brown.

Also home made pizza it great and cheap too. Simply get a packet of easy blend yeast (the stuff that you don't have to add sugar to) mix with flour and add water until you get a dough. Knead for a while and then leave to rise. Divide into pizza base size portions and you can freeze what you don't need.
Then just add whatever topppings you like.

another easy favorite:

cook up some pasta (macaroni and cheese will do fine without the nasty cheese).

Mix in plenty of mozarella cheese and a can of tuna.

tuna cassarole!

Then put on some packages of Taco Bell Sauce, oh man, thats the best!

Beef heart. Tastes great and is dirt cheap!

Make ramen noodle soup, and slowly stir a beaten egg into it with a fork (so it strings) Voila--instant egg drop soup!

Of course, *real* cooking isn't that hard. Honestly. Here's an example: boil some linguini. In a small fry pan briefly sizzle some minced garlic (say 2 cloves, but with garlic more is always better ;) ) and a few chopped green onions (also called scallions fyi). To this add a couple tablespoons dark soy sauce (we use mushroom sauce--tamari or regular soy can also be used), 2 table spoons lime juice, and a teaspoon of sugar. bring to boil, simmer for a minute or two. In a largeish bowl place 2 cups bean sprouts (mung bean, not alfalfa!), 1/3 cup chopped peanuts, the linguini, then pour the sauce over and mix. Thai noodles that will knock your socks off! For added spice, add 1/4-1/2 teaspoon dried red chillis (like you would sprinkle on a pizza) to the sauce when you add the soy and lime juice.
