CD-R question

Post by TheDozen »

I am trying to copy several game CD's at the moment so that I can take the games to college. Before I make any more coasters, I'd like to know what program you use and any other help that might be useful. Thanks very much.

CloneCD works really good for copying software. I've even used Nero to copy before and it worked fine...I like to make backups to all my game cd's cause i know how i throw them around and they get scratched up. So i use the backups and if one gets a good scratch and is ruined i burn me another one!

Just to clarify my brother's post a little, we have an HP 9340i, which supports CloneCD, but haven't had luck with that or Nero. We have CompUSA as well as PNY media. I know both are cheap, but they should work. I really am clueless about burning, but my brother has made probably ten coasters trying to copy his games, and he usually gets buffer underrun errors or read errors. Since the DVD and CD-RW drives are on the same IDE channel, we let the programs copy the CDs from the DVD drive to the hard drive before burning them to the CD-R.
He's going off to college in a week so he needs the CDs relatively fast.
If you feel the need to get high and mighty and say what we're doing is illegal, go ahead, but we're going to copy the CDs nonetheless... So if you could give us any help, we'd appreciate it.
Thanks :)

Try setting clonecd to burn slower than the max ur burner can do. Buffer underrun errors attributed to your computer not being able to supply the data fast enough for the burner to write to disc. So if you slow the burner down to something your computer can handle, you should be golden.

In order to copy games correctly that have copy protection, you need to use your burner to READ the game CD, burn it to the hard drive as an image, then WRITE your copy on a new disk. Do not attempt to copy by using your other CD reader or DvD drive. The copy will not work in most cases. Use CloneCD which works great to copy disks, if it's supported. Have you checked to see if it's supported?

On buffer underruns, do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and see what programs you are running in the background. Close out all screen savers and virus checkers. Any program running in the background that accesses the disk will cause buffer underruns. Clean out your TEMP folder, and make sure you have at least 1 gig free while burning. Defrag your drive.

Great advise Executioner. The only coasters I have made , were caused by me. When I burn a CD, I do nothing until it is done.

Uf... that's probably my problem. The burner is supported by CloneCD. Is RAW-DAO96 the default for writing and RAW+96 the default for reading? That's what the site says to use for our burner.
Thanks a lot for your tips Executioner :)

Remember too that a lot of the newer games are starting to use Safedisc 2 which stops your copies from working even if you used CloneCD to make them. I'm not really aware of any burner/buring proggy that can get around safedisc 2.

You have some good advice here...
but what games are you trying to copy...
and have you visited http://www.gamecopyworld.com ?
they have some instructions for each game that will help you get around some stuff.

I checked out GameCopyWorld this morning and it helped a lot with the settings for CloneCD. I got my first working backup now, so I'm pretty happy. I have to do everything at 1x for it to work. The GCW guide said that only reading had to be done at 1x, but I found that writing at higher speeds didn't work either. I'm working on his sports games first (High Heat, FIFA, NBA Live, Madden, NHL) and then I'll move on to Diablo II, Starcraft, Monkey Island, and whatever else he plays.
Is there a list of games that uses SafeDisc2? This is a link to some ways around the protection, but it sounds more difficult to crack.
Thanks again for all of your help :)

I know my Plextor 12/4/32 will copy SafeDisk2 games; however, they will ONLY work in a Plextor drive. I copied Max Payne last night, and sure enough, my regular CD reader does not see the disk, only the Plextor burner.

Also, you can try this program that is mentioned: betablocker: http://www.cdrsoft.cc/index3.html

I just downloaded it and will try it to see if I can make my original copy work in any cd.

Thanks for the link. How does the program work? Do you make an image of a SafeDisc2 CD and then drop it in there, and it burns it for you? I don't know what the patch/scan sectors thing is either.
Looks good though...

UPDATE on betablocker. I found an English version. The link above is for the German verison. Here is the direct link to download the English version:

The program is only 16k in size! And from what I've been reading on the net, it does work with SafeDisk 2 protection. So after using this program, the backup copy will work in any CD reader or DvD drive.
