Monitor refresh rate
What refresh rate should be used?
SPECS:
Monitor: ViewSonic A90 19"
Graphics: Voodoo5 5500 AGP
OS: WinXP
Current Res & refresh: 1024x768 85Mhz
Color setting: 32 bit

How high at your preferred resolution will your monitor accept refresh rate wise? Say it's max is 95 I've heard you don't want to use it at the max because it may lessen the life of the monitor. Probably 5-10 less should be safe I'd think.
That said my hansol goes only to 85 at my preferred reso(1152x864) but I've been running it at 85 since I've had it about the last 3 years. Hey, I'm an abuser what can I say.

I consider 1024 x 768 too low for 19" Monitor..
Unless your monitor can't handle it, you should go to 1280 x 1024 @ 85 hz
If you're a die-hard 1024 x 768 fan, then 85hz is fine also. Past 85 there is not noticable difference. My monitor does 110 at 1280 x 1024 but I dont go past 100 because its stupid.

1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz (large font) on a 19"
My vision is fine, thank you, and when you work in Photoshop or Excel you appreciate the extra desktop space.

Dual Display on a Radeon 7500. ( 2 x 350 RAMDAC )
20" Sony D2026T (Dell)
19" Sony VX900T (Gateway)
both running 1152 x 864, 32-bit @ 100 Hz........for years now.
Refresh rates = higher the better. I don't like anything less than a 100 Hz.......and yes I CAN see the difference between 85 and 100 Hz. I can't see running anything less than 11x8 on a 19" monitor, 10x7 on a 17" . Basically comes down to personal pref tho. Ant that why they call them Personal Computers?

How high can you go before it isn't safe? Can you tell, or will it just kill the monitor?
I have a Dell (sony) Trinitron Monitor (P990 19" / 18" viewable) Currently running 1280x960. It is PRETTY blurry...I am thinking it's my cheapo 49$ video card (GF2 MX64).
What do you think is a safe refresh rate for that? It is set to optimal right now.

Try it at 85 Hz. It should handle that no problem. If It's still blurry I'd first check the convergence on your display. If that doesn't help maybe it IS your vid card. Nvidia stuff ant exactly known for good 2D. Do you have another card you can check the monitor out on?
Generally, if you have the correct monitor .inf file installed in Windows, it should show you what the max refresh rates are for each res you select.

Theres really no chance of damaging your monitor by setting a too high of a refresh rate, its just that your monitor won't display a picture at all, and will say something like "no sync". This is a pain because you must go into safe mode and then reset your refresh rate lower.

Ok, thanks.
I went and changed the monitor I was using (it was set at default monitor) and the refresh jumped up to 85hz...
So, when the screen looks like it's flickering (happens sometimes) does that mean the refresh is really low? I thought it was just my eyes, but it must have been the monitor.
Yeah, it's still blurry, and I have tried MANY convergence settings..
It is a GeForce2 MX, so my guess is it's blurry.
